Conservation of something as large as the Cuyahoga River may feel overwhelming and impossible. However, there are some simple things you can do at home, in the riverfront parks and when you are out on the water to help keep the river clean for years to come.

Use these 8 easy to follow steps to improve our waterways

• Properly dispose of your trash and recycling. Litter ends up in the storm drains which eventually makes its way into our rivers and lakes.
• Mulch or compost yard waste and clippings. Organic debris can clog streams and change the river's water chemistry.
• Scoop your dog's poop. Not only will your yard be cleaner, but you will keep harmful bacteria from getting into the river.
  
• Install a rain barrel. Rain barrels help reduce runoff, erosion and provide a free source of water for your garden and for washing your car.

• Use less water. Conserving water will not only help save money on  your utility bill but will lower the burden on water treatment plants.
• Landscape with native plants. Plants that are meant to grow in your area require less watering and fertilizer than non-native species.      
• Use organic gardening techniques. Fertilizer and pesticides soak through the soil and end up in our waterways. This can cause excessive algal blooms which kills fish and other organisms.               
• Dispose of unused/expired medication appropriately. Ask your local pharmacist if they have a program for  getting rid of old  prescriptions and over the counter medications.
